Experience Submillimeter Astronomy in Summer at the CSO
John Carter, who is in the first year of
a European Master's program at University of
Orsay (Paris, France), is visiting CSO to have experiences on
submillimeter astronomy. He studies fundamental
and applied physics at the university. He has carried out two
internships to study interstellar molecular clouds and Martian aerosol
with the
Mars Express team. He chose CSO this year because he has great
interest in
infrared and submillimeter astronomy and astrophysics.
John is working with Dr. Richard Chamberlin, the technical
manager at the CSO, to develop a code to analyze the atmospheric
transmission data
taken at the South Pole. He is also in a team of the expanded Submillimeter Array
(eSMA) project and in other science projects being done at the
CSO that try to detect a new molecule from a starburst galaxy. He
arrived on the Big Island, Hawaii, in early May and will stay
until early August.
