CSOLOGO1 CSOLOGO2CSO Booth on AstroDay 2006

AstoDay 2006 was held on 6th of May 2006.  At the CSO booth, we had a CSO telescope art project, and a small parabolic dish demonstration to show how a telescope collect radiation from distant astronomical objects.  Both activities were very successful throughout the day.  We found many kids and adults who enjoyed activities on the CSO booth and who showed strong interests in science.  For the art project, about 200 kids and adults made their decorations.  For the small parabolic dish demonstration, by dropping a ping-pong ball down on the good surface of the parabolic dish which sat against the gravity, people learned the ball was bounced up at the focus position always.  Therefore, people understood how radiation is reflected on the surface of the dish and sent to our sensitive detectors and cameras to make maps/images of stars, molecular clouds, galaxies, and so on in high sensitivity.  Also, people understood how important a smooth surface of the primary dish and following mirrors would be for the high efficiency of a telescope.   The 1.2 m parabolic dish, which was used for the demonstration, was donated by Oceanic Time Warner Cable located in Hilo.  We are so grateful for their warm hearted donation and their support for our public educational outreach efforts.
