The CSO consists
in part of a 10.4 meter primary mirror designed by Robert Leighton. The dish has 84 hexagonal panels made
of aluminum epoxied onto a honeycomb backing that is mounted on a steel
backing structure.

This is an
attempt to display the engineering challenges put forth by the sheer area and
numbers of this system. There
are 99 standoff assemblies consisting of a bracket, thermistor, Peltier
device, and heat exchanger.
Along with that comes (198) thermistor wires, (198) Peltier device
wires, and heat exchanger coolant lines. All routed on the backing structure
of the dish.

The electronics
are housed in 3 racks seen on the right. The shorter center rack houses the 99 Channel DSOS
Controller. The 2 taller racks
house the Driver units. Each
Driver rack contains 2 Driver units along with their power supplies.

The different
colored lines indicate the different quadrants. I split the dish into 4 quadrants for Driver and heat
exchange purposes.

Wiring and
plumbing were routed to distribute the weight of the material as evenly as
possible on the backing structure.

The blue and red
dots indicate the inputs and outputs, respectively, of the coolant loops.
